HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: WHAT AWLO STARTED AS
AWLO was founded in 2009 to address a critical gap: _African women were leading, but their stories, impact, and networks were not being systematically prepared, positioned, projected, and celebrated at scale.
We began as a movement to connect African women leaders across government, business, civil society, and the diaspora and to build the infrastructure they needed: mentorship, visibility, awards, and policy access.
Our founding belief: When women lead with integrity, nations transform.

Today, AWLO is a global leadership ecosystem for African women, Caribbean women, Jamaican women, Black women across the Diaspora, and HeForShe allies.
We don’t just celebrate leaders. We:

4. Celebrate them through national honors and global platforms

Built systems to prepare, position, and project women leaders. Trained and elevated 2,000+ women and youth across Africa and the Diaspora in governance, business, entrepreneurship, agriculture, and technology.
Established training pipelines with partners including Legacy Builders Leadership Academy, focusing on faith-based, STEM, and sustainable leadership.
Created country-specific “Legacy Honours” — including AWLO Canada Legacy Honours 2026 to celebrate diaspora impact locally.
Convened leaders around SDGs, women in governance, and economic inclusion. AWLO communiques have been presented at AU and ECOWAS forums.
Connected emerging leaders with established icons through 1:1 mentorship, board placement, and funding access. Forged partnerships across faith, business, academia, and government to fund large-scale programs.
Launched AWLO Diaspora Summits in Canada, US, and UK to unite African, Caribbean, Jamaican and Black women leaders + _HeForShe allies_ to drive policy and business partnerships.
Institutionalized male allyship in African leadership engaging presidents, CEOs and traditional leaders to champion gender parity as a leadership imperative.
Created world-class platforms to celebrate excellence, including PAALA – Pan-African Awards for Leadership & Achievement_ since 2022. PAALA has honored 200+ presidents, ministers, CEOs, activists, and diaspora leaders and is now the most recognized leadership award for African women globally.
Projected AWLO honorees onto UN, AU, and international media stages. Many awardees have advanced to cabinet, board, and diplomatic roles following AWLO recognition.
